Crime against women is a serious issue in every country around the globe. Few countries have higher rates of crime with women such as s*xual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking, r*pe, marital r*pe, and many more. These issues are often linked to larger problems like weak laws, cultural beliefs, and lack of support systems. Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or s*xual intimate partner violence or non-partner s*xual violence in their lifetime. Every year South Africa faces serious and troubling issues with crime against women. This country has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world. Many women in South Africa experience violence from intimate partners. S*xual violence, including r*pe, is always high in South Africa. Reports and statistics often reveal that a large number of women are victims of s*xual assault. The sad part is many cases are not even recorded due to fear of stigma or distrust in the legal system.

 

2. Brazil

Brazil is the second country which is recorded as having the most crime against women. The latest annual report from the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety (FBSP) reveals a  0.8 percent increase in femicides from 2022 to 2023. Reports of r*pe rose by 5.2 percent, while the number of female homicide victims remained stable, with a slight decrease of 0.1 percent. This makes it very evident why Brazil is second on the list of most unsafe countries for women. According to the World Population Review, not only women but also generally Brazil comes in the seventh position for certain crimes.

 

3. Russia

Russia has the second-highest rate of intentional homicide against women. It is the biggest reason for its third-place spot on the list. Thousands of women in Russia became victims of family violence crimes in the year 2021. According to an independent study, of more than 2000 women in fifty cities and towns in Russia, 70% of them have experienced at least one form of gender-based violence at home. It may be from physical, psychological, economic, or s*xual.

 

4. Mexico

The United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico, is the fourth highest state when we look at the crime rate against women. In 2022, it was found that the national femicide rate in Mexico stood at 1.43 cases per one lakh women. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography in Mexico (INEGI), 66.1% of all women ages 15 and older have experienced some kind of violence in their lives.

 

5. Iran

Iran is the fifth country where women are unsafe. Iran’s legal system is not particularly friendly towards women. Although there are laws aimed at protecting women, including domestic violence legislation and law enforcement operations to address family disputes where complaints by the wife have been reported. Women often have to overcome legal and societal obstacles to gain justice. A massive  85% of the murders were committed by the victims’ husbands. In 2022, 16 women were killed by their husbands, followed by 15 in 2023, with a sharp increase to 27 in 2024 amid the climate of state crackdowns on women and girls.

The high rates of crime against women in these five countries highlight a global issue. These are the most unsafe countries for women with the highest crime rates. Hope in the future we see a reduction in the chart and women feel freer and safer in their motherland.
