Various Reasons Why Most Of The Airplanes Are White In Color

via

Most of us would have traveled by airplane at least once in their life. We have seen manier times that airplanes are mostly in white color. Yes, there are exceptions too, like Air New Zealand which has Black color airplanes and KLM which are mostly blue. But the majority of the airplanes are white in color. Did you ask yourself, that why the color is always white? Why not any other color? Let us tell you the various reasons why most airplanes are white in color.

1. Cost-Effective

One of the reasons why airplanes are white is because the white color is cheaper than the other colors. Furthermore, paint also increases the weight of an aircraft. This means that more fuel is required. According to Boeing, to paint a typical Boeing 767, approximately 90 gallons equivalent to 341 liters of paint is required. Boeing 777 requires 110 gallons which are 416 liters, Boeing 747 requires 120 gallons equals to 454 liters and a 787 Dreamliner need somewhere between 362 liters to 453 liters of paint. White color is cheaper and cost-effective.

2. Thermal Advantages

White color does not absorb heat and it is a reflector of lights. In white color, the light is not converted into heat and hence required less fuel to keep the airplane cooler. While other colors absorb heat very quickly and efficiently, this warms the airplane and therefore more fuel is required to keep the airplane cooler.

3. Damage Control

Regularly airplanes are checked for dents, cracks or any kind of oil leakage. With white color, any kind of cracks, and dents are easily detectable. Also, white also finds oil leakages as they leave the corrosion marks.

4. White Does Not Fade

via

Airplanes fly at high altitudes; they are parked in even extreme sunlight and also in chilled snow and rain. They are exposed to several atmospheric conditions. In such conditions, other color airplanes tend to fade. This will require lots of paint to keep its appeal. White color looks good even after spending a lot of time in the air.

5. Search And Rescue

via

If there is a crash or any mishap, white color can be spotted easily in a massive body of water and land. Also, even at night, white color can easily be traceable.

6. Reduces Bird Strikes

via

The visibility of an aircraft is enhanced by white color. The darker color reduces the contrast between the airplane and the visual background. This reduces the ability of birds to detect an airplane at a sufficient amount of time to avoid colliding.

7. Resale Value

via

If the airplane is of a different color other than white, then it will negatively impact its resale value. The reason, the buyer needs to repaint the entire airplane which will increase the painting cost and also add more weight to the airplane.
