Mumbai which is popular as the entertainment and financial capital is the largest city of India and fondly called as the city of dreams. One of its tourist place called Versova Beach was a centre of embarrassment until last year as the beach had become a dumping source of solid waste and trash.
On August 13, 2016, Hollywood star Lionardo Di Caprio shared a recording of the shoreline which had just about 5 million kg of waste.
A lawyer named Afroz Shah along with the help of United Nations and 300 volunteers completed the unimaginable task.
The 86-week-long campaign transformed Versova beach, one of the dirtiest in Mumbai, to one of its cleanest.
“It is our duty to protect the environment for our future generations. One of Mumbai’s dirtiest beaches, Versova, has been completely transformed into a clean and pristine beach. Over 86 weeks, Mumbai citizens got together and worked towards making this a reality,” said Modi adding, “The entire credit for this goes to Versova Residents Volunteers (VRV) and their leader Afroz Shah, who began the clean-up in October 2015.”

On this World environment day, PM Modi lauds Versova beach clean-up of 5.4-million-kg trash. “ It is a great feeling that the PM has recognized our efforts and we are thankful to him. However, our work continues like it has and we are planning the next week’s cleanup schedule,” said Shah.
