Vinesh Phogat Retires From Wrestling After Paris Olympics Fiasco, ‘Maa… Wrestling Won, I Lost’

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from her final gold medal wrestling match in the 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics. She was found to be 100 gm overweight on the day of the final. The entire nation is disheartened after this fiasco with Vinesh Phogat.

A day after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling. She shared an emotional and heartbreaking post on X about her decision to retire. Addressing her mother Premlata, Vinesh, a three-time Olympian, wrote,

 “Mom, wrestling won against me, I lost… Your dreams and my courage are shattered. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will forever be indebted to all of you. Please forgive (me).” 

 

Vinesh Phogat was eligible to compete on Day 1. As per the rules, a wrestler must meet the weight limit on both days. Vinesh was found overweight on the day of the finale and she will be not eligible for the Silver medal either.

Vinesh began her tournament by defeating the 82 matches undefeated and defending champion Yui Susaki. Yui Susaki never lost a bout in her international career and is a four-time world champion.

After this, she defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Livach to qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, she defeated Cuba Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to qualify for the finals. She became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympic finals. However, now she is disqualified and Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba will play the Gold Medal match against USA’s Sarah Ann Hilderbrandt.
