Passenger-captured videos showed the mid-cabin exit door entirely parting from the airplane mid-air, highlighting the dire nature of the situation. The unsettling incident has sparked inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the door collapse and generated worries, underscoring the vital need for safety precautions when flying.

 

Alaska Airlines Comments On The Situation

Soon after the evening departure, AS1282 from Portland to Ontario, CA (California), encountered an incident. With 171 passengers and six crew members, the aircraft returned to Portland International Airport without incident. In a post on X, Alaska Airlines stated, “We are looking into what happened and will offer additional information as it becomes available. The incident has triggered a thorough examination to determine the nature and cause of the occurrence. Further, it emphasizes the airline’s commitment to safety and transparency.

 

The NTSB Investigates Further

According to a post on X, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is looking into an incident involving Alaska Airlines Flight 1282.

The aircraft was safely diverted back to Portland after reaching a maximum height of 16,325 feet, according to a social media post by real-time aircraft movement monitor Flightradar24.

According to Flightradar24, the Boeing 737 MAX that was involved in today’s incident was delivered to Alaska Airlines on October 1, 2023. Furthermore, it went into commercial service on November 11, 2023. Since then, it has only completed 145 flights.

A rear cabin exit door is located aft of the wings but before the rear escape door on the 737-9 MAX. When there are a lot of seats together, this is turned on to comply with evacuation regulations. According to Flightradar24, the doors on Alaska Airlines aircraft are permanently “plugged” and are not activated.
