Devastating scenes all around Myanmar and Thailand as the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at 12.50 PM. The earthquake caused widespread devastation and panic. According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter was located 16 km northwest of Sagaing City, approximately 250 km from the capital, Naypyidaw. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, triggering a strong aftershock of 6.8 magnitude.

So far, several have been reported dead, with casualties expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Among the worst-affected areas is Mandalay, where a mosque collapsed while people were praying inside. A university building was also severely damaged, resulting in casualties. A 1,000-bed hospital in Naypyidaw has been declared a mass casualty center, and emergency teams are working to treat the injured. The military government has declared a state of emergency and is urgently seeking international aid.

Tremors Felt In Neighbouring Countries

The earthquake was not limited to Myanmar but also affected neighbouring countries. In Thailand, tremors shook buildings in Bangkok, leading to temporary suspension of metro and rail services. The Prime Minister has declared an emergency in the Thai capital and is holding an urgent crisis meeting.

In China’s Yunnan province, the earthquake magnitude was recorded at 7.9 by the China Earthquake Network Center. Additionally, tremors of 4.4 magnitude were reported in Kolkata, Manipur, Dhaka, and Chattogram.

Horrifying Scenes Captured

Social media is flooded with terrifying videos showing the earthquake’s impact. One clip shows water overflowing from an infinity pool on a high-rise building. Another video captures the collapse of a 30-story under-construction skyscraper in Bangkok, with 78 workers trapped beneath the rubble. Officials estimate hundreds of injuries, with three confirmed deaths at the site.

In Myanmar, a historic bridge over the Irrawaddy River has collapsed, along with multiple residential buildings. Photos from Mandalay suggest that many more people may be trapped beneath the debris. Additionally, a video shows significant damage to Mandalay Airport and a monastery in Taunggyi, near the Thailand border.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern and readiness to assist. He posted on X, saying, “Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. Have asked our authorities to be on standby.”

Rescue teams are working tirelessly, and authorities in Myanmar and neighbouring countries are preparing for further relief operations.
