Are today’s children apathetic, or are their cell phones distracting them? Is it the sole cause that students nowadays are less attentive to their environment and happenings?
A few might agree, and a few might not because a tool can sometimes be distractive and sometimes the sole reason why kids are attentive to what’s happening.
Taking control of the school bus when the driver fainted, a Michigan student saved his classmates, and he attributes his bravery to not being distracted by his mobile.
What Actually Happened?
13-year-old Dillon Reeves saw that the woman operating the bus that was transporting him and his friends from Carter Middle School in Warren home had passed out. In a flash, he grabbed the wheel and applied the brakes, guiding the bus to a halt away from traffic and directing his terrified students to dial 911.
The kid has come up for the first time since the April 26 event, telling the program, ‘I just knew what to do at that moment. The bus was swerving off the road.’
Parents’s Reaction
His father, Steve, told CBS: ‘What else are you going to do when you don’t have a phone? You’re going to look at people; you’re going to notice stuff. You’re going to look out the window. So it’s a very powerful lesson, maybe a change-the-world kind of lesson.’
Steve stated during a news conference following the event that he and his wife, Ireta, were ‘very, very proud’ of their son, adding ‘he is very attentive to his surroundings.’
‘Jesus had everything to do with the bravery and swift action Dillon displayed today.’ Ireta wrote on Facebook. ‘To Dillon, it’s just another day. He has no idea the number of people who are so proud of him today,’ she added.
What Were The Other Students Doing?
Classmates who were inside the van during the terrifying encounter told CBS that they were distracted by their technological devices when Dillon took charge of the situation.
‘I had my AirPods in,’ stated one kid.
‘I was looking on my phone,’ claimed another, adding, ‘I was on my phone playing a little game.’
Dillon’s actions have given his parents even more reasons not to give him a cell phone.
Some kids may find this unfair, but Dillon merely shrugged and replied, ‘Whatever. My parents are old school.’

The security camera on the bus transporting pupils home from Carter Middle School in Warren, Michigan, recorded footage of Dillon’s brave acts.
Dillon, dressed in a green hoodie and pants, is shown racing to the wheel and looking for the break after discovering the driver was asleep. He could park the bus on Masonic Boulevard and instructed his friends, who can be perceived as screaming on the audio, to dial 911. The bus driver, who had only been on the job since July 2022 and has yet to be identified, was taken to a nearby hospital for an unidentified medical problem. By god’s grace, there were no injuries among the passengers.
What Does The Superintendent of The Warren Consolidated School Have To Say?
‘He stood up, assessed the situation, and saw that the driver had passed out. This was an extraordinary act of courage.’ said Robert Livernois, Superintendent of The Warren Consolidated School. ‘He jumped up from his seat, threw his backpack down, ran to the front and grabbed the wheel, and brought the bus to a stop,’ he continues.
Dillon was also honored by Warren Police Department Commissioner Dwyer, who invited him to the police station with his pleased parents. Carter Middle School was reached out to for comment.
What do you believe was the reason Dillon was so focused on what was going on while the other kids weren’t?
