On Tuesday, a massive fire burst out on a Japan Airlines aircraft (JAL Flight 156) on the Haneda Airport runway in Tokyo. The reports state that the fire aboard the aircraft is related to a potential collision with a Coast Guard aircraft. The jet is seen traveling down the runway in the pictures released by NHK, Japan’s official broadcaster, just before an explosion of orange flames appears from behind and underneath it.

JAL Flight 516

The aircraft, identified as JAL Flight 516, was headed to Haneda from Shin Chitose Airport in Japan. According to a Japan Airlines representative, the plane was carrying around 300 passengers and was further taking off from Hokkaido’s Shin-Chitose airport. According to a JAL spokesperson, all 379 passengers and crew members had managed to evacuate from a Japan Airlines aircraft that caught fire at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. However, according to NHK news in Japan, the aircraft is still burning.

According to the NHK report, after landing at Haneda Airport, the aircraft collided with what looked to be a Japan Coast Guard aircraft. Moreover, the Japan Coast Guard stated that it is looking into claims of an incident involving one of its planes and the JAL airplane that was on fire. Haneda, one of the busiest airports in Japan, experiences heavy traffic, particularly throughout the New Year’s holiday.

Were The Passengers And Crew Rescued?

Remarkably, following the crash, five of the six crew members on board the Japan Coast Guard aircraft are reportedly missing. The pilot was taken out of the aircraft.

The fire had spread throughout a large portion of the aircraft. Furthermore, later footage showed firefighting crews aggressively attempting to put out the flames with sprays of water.

The Current Situation Of The Flight

At the moment, firefighters are attempting to put out the fire. According to CNN, social media images showed the passenger jet moving before catching fire in a massive ball of flames. Then, as firefighters attempt to extinguish the fire, the aircraft is seen coming to a stop with its emergency slides open. Moreover, people can also be seen fleeing. We anticipate more information.
