After a furious argument with U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declined to issue an apology. Initially intended to discuss a settlement between the United States and Ukraine, the conference swiftly descended into a heated argument. Vance said Zelenskyy was being “disrespectful,” while Trump accused him of “gambling with World War Three.”

Even though things got intense, Zelenskyy still hopes that Ukraine and the U.S. can fix their relationship. He said that the bond between the two countries is stronger than just one meeting.

Oval Office Clash Between Trump And Zelenskyy

During the Oval Office meeting on Friday, the leaders were supposed to talk about a big U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal that would allow American companies to use Ukraine’s resources in exchange for investment. But instead, the conversation got heated.

Trump, who some people say is too friendly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, told Zelenskyy that he was taking too many risks. “You’re gambling with World War Three,” Trump warned. Zelenskyy didn’t back down and said that Ukraine needed security guarantees, not just economic deals.

At one point, Vance stepped in and said, “Mr. President, with respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to argue this in front of the American media.” Zelenskyy tried to explain his side, but Trump cut him off, raising his voice and telling him, “This country has backed you far more than a lot of people say they should have.”

Zelenskyy Said, ‘I Won’t Apology’

Later that day, Zelenskyy was on Fox News, where he was asked if he owed Trump an apology. “No. I respect the President. And I respect the American people. I’m not sure we did something bad,” he said.

Even though he admitted that arguing in public was “bad for both sides,” he didn’t regret standing up for Ukraine. “We are grateful and regretful about this. I truly mean it; we greatly desired to maintain strong relations.”

Following the meeting, European leaders, such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, supported Zelenskyy and assured him of their solidarity. Having just met with Trump, Starmer added that any agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine would also have to come with security protections.

After the meeting, Trump told reporters that things didn’t go well. “Zelenskyy overplayed his hand,” he said. He said he wanted peace but felt that Zelenskyy just wanted to “fight, fight, fight.”

Trump also revealed that he had talked to Vladimir Putin a few days before the meeting. He claimed that Putin was open to making a “deal.” He insisted that he was “not aligned with Putin” but rather “with the world” and “with Europe.”

Zelenskyy disagreed, calling Putin a killer and a terrorist. He said there should be “no compromises” with someone like him. To prove his point, he even brought printed photos of Ukrainian prisoners of war and showed them to Trump.

What Happens Next?

Now, everyone is worried about what will happen to U.S. support for Ukraine. If Trump wins another term, things could change. Since Congress is already divided on the issue, Zelenskyy will have to work even harder to secure more aid.

Meanwhile, European countries are thinking about a backup plan to help Ukraine if the U.S. pulls back. Starmer promised that the UK would discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, and Macron has been pushing for stronger European involvement.

Both Trump and Zelenskyy said they are open to speaking again despite the heated exchange. According to Zelenskyy, “Yes, of course, our relationship can be repaired.” However, he also stated clearly that he would continue to fight for the future and safety of Ukraine.
