What Is THAAD? The US Anti-Missile System Heading To Israel

As per the reports, Iran shot many missiles at Israel. The US sent a special shield to Israel. The name of the shield is THAAD. It can stop missiles high in the sky. The US also sent hundreds of soldiers to help Israel.

What Is THAAD?

THAAD is a good shield that can stop many flying weapons called missiles. It is unique because it can prevent these missiles high up in space and close to the ground. The US keeps making it harder to stop new threats from opponents.

Why Did They Send THAAD?

The US leader, Joe Biden, wanted to keep Israel in safe hands. Therefore, he sent Thaad because Iran might attack Israel with missiles. The group that works with Iran might attack Israel and Israel and fight back against Iran soon. A big leader of a group called Hezbollah died, which made things more critical between Israel and Iran.

Iranian authorities warn that any Israeli aggression, including potential strikes on Tehran’s nuclear facilities, would provoke a forceful response. In light of these escalating threats, Israel requested US support for arms and ammunition, something that has been solicited over the last few years in its war against Gaza, killing 45,000 people and displacing the entire population. In Lebanon, nearly 2500 people were killed and 10000 injured.

How Does THAAD Work?

THAAD is a special protection that stops dangerous flying weapons called missiles. It waits until the missile is in the last part of flying just before it hits something. THAAD can stop missiles when they are still very high up in space or close to the ground. It can handle different kinds of missiles that fly short, medium, or long distances. The clever thing about hard is that it doesn’t use bombs to blow up the missiles. Instead, it just crashes into them hard and fast. This crash is so powerful that it breaks the missile into pieces, stopping it from hurting anyone. So hard is like a strong baseball that can hit lots of balls /missiles out of the park before they land.

Components Of THAAD

THAAD is composed of four major elements:

  • Interceptor: it destroys incoming missiles using impact force
  • Launch Vehicle: Mobile trucks that carry and launch the interceptors
  • Radar: Tracks and Detects threats from a range of 870 to 3000 km
  • Fire Control System: Coordinates the Launching and targeting of interceptors

A standard THAAD includes six truck-wanted launches, each carrying up to 8 interceptors and radar and radio equipment. Reloading each launcher takes about 30 minutes, and a full battery requires 95  US soldiers to operate.

US Role In THAAD Deployment

One of the most critical aspects of THAAD is that US people exclusively operate it. If deployed in Israel, it will require the presence of the US on Israeli soil. The US Army currently possesses 7/3 battery deployment in various global conflicts as a part of its defensive strategy. This decision to send to Israel may be just weeks before the US presidential election. That marks the first major US military deployment to Israel since the country started bombing Gaza.
