Who Is Gukesh D? The Youngest Indian Chessmaster, Here Is Everything About Him

India’s youngest chess grandmaster D Gukesh has become the world’s highest-ranked Indian chess player, ending Vishvanathan Anand’s 36-year-long stay. Further, announcing the same, The ICF on Friday informed that Gukesh now enjoys the 9th position in the ranking by the international chess federation. Dommaraju Gukesh, popularly known as Gukesh D, was born in Chennai on May 26, 2006. The city is also the birthplace of Indian chess master Anand. His father is an ENT doctor, whereas his mother is a microbiologist.

The young record holder had an immense love for chess from the early days of his childhood. Further, his coach Mr. Bhaskar inspired him to learn the game at the tender age of 7. With all the support and encouragement, Gukesh earned himself the title of a FIDE-rated player in just six months.

Furthermore, he was under the guidance of his new coach, Vijayanand. Under his guidance, the little chess maestro became the candidate master after trumping the 2015 Asian school chess championship. After this, there was no turning back; he went on to win five Gold Asian Youth Chess Championships in the Year 2018. Moreover, he earned the prestigious title of international master at 11 years and 9 months in 2018.

In 2019, Gukesh registered his name in the record book by becoming India’s first and the world’s second-youngest Grandmaster of the world. He was just after GM Sergey Karjakin, who is 17 days younger than him. However, he slipped to the third position when New Jersey player Abhimanue Mishra became the youngest chess master at the age of 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days.

He further made history when he defeated Carlson again, in a rated game, on his 17th birthday this year. He is the youngest one to defeat Carlson.

17-year-old Gukesh D achieved historical success by outshining Azerbaijan’s Misratdin Iskandarov in just 44 moves in the second-round match of the World Cup. He’s now the highest-ranked chess player in India.
