Who Is Mohan Charan Majhi? Everything About Odisha’s New Chief Minister

Mohan Charan Majhi was appointed as the first Chief Minister of the BJP in Odisha on Wednesday. Majhi, a fierce tribal leader well-known for his excellent work in the Odisha Assembly, has been the Keonjhar Assembly seat’s holder since 2019 and won it by 11,000 votes in the 2024 Assembly election. Further, on June 12, the twice-elected MLA Majhi will take the oath of office as the state’s new chief minister. PM Narendra Modi will also be present during the event.

Beginning his political career nearly thirty years ago as a village sarpanch, Mohan Charan Majhi, the tribal leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was recently named the fifteenth chief minister of Odisha. Moreover, the 52-year-old son of a watchman, Majhi is from Raikala village in the mineral-rich and tribal-dominated Keonjhar region. Also, he was elected to the Odisha parliament four times: in 2000, 2004, 2019, and 2024. From 1997 to 2000, Majhi, a graduate, served as the village chief. Before winning the 2000 election to become an MLA from Keonjhar, he served as the Adivasi Morcha secretary for the BJP.

Majhi will take the oath of office as the state’s new chief minister. PM Narendra Modi will also be present during the event. The ceremony will take place at Bhubaneswar’s Janata Maidan.

In particular, the BJD president and departing chief minister Naveen Patnaik have received an invitation from the BJP to attend. Notably, Lord Jagannath in Puri received the first invitation card for the event. Several recently elected MLAs ceremoniously gave it to the shrine dating back to the 12th century.

Majhi on being named the CM,  “Due to the blessings of Lord Jagannath, the BJP achieved a majority in Odisha and will form the government in the state. I thank the 4.5 crore Odias who voted for change.”

In the Odisha Assembly Election of 2024, BJP secured 78 seats with a vote share of 40.07 percent. In all, 1,00,64,827 votes were cast for the BJP in the state.
