Who Is Rachel Reeves? UK’s First Female Finance Minister; Everything To Know About Her

Females in finance are strong and also influential. The world has witnessed decent women in finance leaving their impact on nations and changing the economic dynamics of the world. Well, one such woman in finance is Rachel Reeves. The recent UK elections had everyone’s attention. From Rishi Sunak losing the position to Rachel Reeves being selected as the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer, the people of the UK showed that they wanted change.

 

The UK’s First Female Chancellor Of The Exchequer

Rachel Reeves is the first woman to occupy the sought-after title of Chancellor of the Exchequer (similar to a finance minister). Rachel made history on Friday when she was named to the position by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

She took to X to inform how the UK’s economic growth is now a national mission. Her post shows her dedication and energy towards improving the economic figures of the UK.  Her post reads:

“It is the honour of my life to have been appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. Economic growth was the Labour Party’s mission. It is now a national mission. Let’s get to work.”

 

Who Is Rachel Reeves?

Reeves was born in southwest London on February 13, 1979.  She possesses strong knowledge of finance as a result of studying at New College, Oxford, and the London School of Economics. Further, at the young age of 14, Rachel became the British Girls’ Chess Champion. She studied philosophy, economics, and also politics at Oxford and completed her master’s from London. She rose to prominence as Labour’s head of financial policy in 2021. Before that, she worked under Keir  Starmer as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and then as the Leader of the Opposition. She was also assigned to the British bank Halifax/Bank of Scotland (HBOS) and the British embassy in Washington.

In 2010, Reeves, who joined Labour at the age of sixteen, ran for the Leeds West constituency and became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the first time. Additionally, in the elections of 2015, 2017, and 2019, she kept her seat and maintained her position. Further, the former child chess champion was elected as the first Member of Parliament for the newly formed Leeds West and Pudsey seat in the July 4 general election. Ellie Reeves, her sister, is also a Labour Party member.
