A 32-year-old woman in Adelaide, Australia, died after being struck by a car driven by a man “known to the woman,” according to a statement made public by South Australian Police on Sunday. Furthermore, she was identified as Hoskins by the local media.

According to the police statement, the woman “suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment.” As a result, she sadly passed away in the hospital overnight.

Moreover, according to reports from local media outlets and Australia’s ABC national television, Hoskins’ husband, Rohan Dennis—a two-time world time trial champion and Tour de France stage winner—has been detained and accused of her death.

 

The Accused Gets Arrested

The 33-year-old male who was “arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care, and endangering life” was not given a name in the police statement. The individual has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear at the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13.

CNN has made contact with the Adelaide Magistrates Court and the South Australian Police to request verification that Dennis is the person who was detained and charged. The date of his court appearance has also been requested to be verified. CNN has also contacted Dennis for a statement through his management team and website.

Moreover, per the protocol, the names of the accused persons involved in an incident will not be confirmed. A police official said this.

Hoskins’ Olympic gold champion teammate from Rio 2016 and London 2012, Anna Meares, shared a picture of them on X. Meares wrote, “I have a very heavy heart.” “I’m thinking of their kids, relatives, and other pals. It’s a sad and challenging time. Mel Hoskins, rest in peace.”

The international organization for women cyclists, CPA Women, continued, “We are saddened to learn of Melissa Hoskins’ passing and offer our condolences to her family and all those who had the good fortune to ride with her during her far too brief life. “We will miss you, Melissa.”

In addition, Dennis’s 2022 World Tour cycling team, JumboVisma, shared on X: We have been deeply saddened and regretful to hear of Melissa Dennis Hoskins’s demise. “We would like to offer our sympathies to her friends, acquaintances, and family. We send them our best wishes for courage in the wake of this tragic loss.”

Furthermore, Hoskins was an accomplished track rider. As a member of Australia’s women’s team pursuit quartet in 2015, she won a world championship and set a new record. She competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games in the same event. However, she narrowly missed out on a medal in London (2012).
