Why Beer Bottles Are Green Or Brown?
When you see the bottle of beer, you will see it in either green or brown bottle only. Studies have shown that many years ago beer bottles were made in Egypt. Beer was made and served in transparent bottles at that time. The beer makers noticed that these plain glass bottles were not good for storing beer.
When exposed to direct sunlight, the light would penetrate the transparent bottles, causing the brew to lose its taste and flavor, and leaving an unpleasant smell. This is known as “lightstruck” – a phenomenon that occurs when ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate the glass and react with the compounds in the beer, especially the hops. Hops contain isohumulones, which can release a foul odor when exposed to UV light.
Why Brown Bottles Are Best For Storing Beer
When the beer company started to suffer, they tried a lot of methods to solve it. However, they couldn’t figure out the final one. Hence, after a lot of research and studies, the final result was to try and color the bottle brown. The remedy worked. The brown bottle kept the flavor intact. Even today, the beer industry still leans heavily towards the use of these brown bottles.
Green Bottles
When World War II happened, brown glass was scarce. When there was a storage of brown bottles the company had to opt for the new color, which was green. Over time, people started associating green bottles with higher-quality or superior beer. But green bottles don’t protect the beer from UV light like brown bottles do. Despite this, many breweries continue to use green bottles because it’s part of their brand identity and tradition.
Introduction Of Cans
Nowadays, cans are largely preferred because they provide total protection from UV light. It helps to maintain freshness. The other advantage that looked incredibly wonderful is the cooling effect, and they are handy as well for outdoor social occasions.
