10. Odia – Odisha
Odia which is spoken in Odisha grabs the tenth place in the list. Odia which is an Indo Aryan Eastern language is spoken by 3.21 % of the population in the country at present.
9. Gujarati – Gujarat
The state of Gujarat and the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu speak Gujarat. Gujarati is spoken by 4.48 % of the population in India.
8. Kannada – Karnataka
The official language of Karnataka is spoken by 3.69 % of the whole population.
7. Urdu – Bollywood’s Favorite Language
Urdu is spoken mainly in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana and Delhi. It originates from Indo Aryan Central civilization. 5.01 % of the population speak Urdu.
6. Tamil – Tamil Nadu
Tamil which comes from Dravidian civilization is the official language of Tamil Nadu. Around 5.91 % of the population in India speaks Tamil.
5. Marathi – Maharashtra
Marathi is the main language of the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Marathi is an Indo Aryan Southern language and around 6.9 % of the country’s population speaks Marathi.
4. Telugu – Andhra Pradesh
Telugu, which is a language of the South Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Telangana and Andaman and Nicobar Islands has an estimated 74 million speakers in the country. The language originates from Dravidian civilization.
3. Bengali – West Bengal
Bengali is the second most spoken language in India, which has nearly 83 million speakers, spread over the Eastern states of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam and Tripura.

English is not an Indian language. Britishers promoted English as the language of administration and of the higher law courts which led eventually made people learn English during their ruling in India making Indians as slaves. The English language is the second most spoken language in the country, used as a tool for business and trade potentially more than for everyday language exchange. Around 10% of India’s population speaks English.
1. Hindi – Widely Spoken Language
Some people can’t accept the fact and argue blindly that Hindi is a national language. But it’s not. Hindi is a widely spoken language but not the national language. India has no national language. Hindi is spoken in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Jharkhand. The percentage of Hindi speakers in India is only 40% of its population.
The population is 1.3 billion, and 60% of the population speaks 29 different native languages.
Some other extensively spoken Indian languages are Punjabi, Maithili, Kashmiri, and Assamese. There are 22 major languages in India, written in 13 different scripts, with over 720 dialects.
