Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, has publicly apologized after a customer raised concerns about an extra charge for vegetarian meal deliveries. The issue came to light when Rohit Ranjan, Assistant Vice President of E-commerce at Route To Market, shared his frustration in a LinkedIn post.
Zomato’s Veg Mode Fee Sparks Debate
A user named Rohit Ranjan, Route To Market’s assistant Vice President of e-commerce shared the post mentioning Zomato’s Veg Mode fee. He wrote in this post,
“Being a vegetarian in India these days feels like a curse. The latest masterstroke-introducing an “extra charge” for the veg enablement fleet has officially turned us into a premium subscription plan. So, fellow herbivores, brace yourselves! We’ve gone from “green and healthy” to “green and pricey.” Thanks, Zomato, for proving once again that being veg is now a luxury tax.”
Deepinder Goyal Apologizes For Veg Mode Fees

The post on LinkedIn caught the attention of Zomato’s CEO Deepinder Goyal. He immediately came into action. Reacting to the post he apologized. Deepinder wrote,
“This is absolutely stupid on our part. I am super sorry for this. This charge will be removed today itself. Will also fix what’s needed to fix in the team so that such s**t doesn’t happen again.”
Further adding to this Rohit instantly replied,
“Thank you once again for stepping in and saving us! What truly surprised me during this journey was successfully driving this idea from the ideation phase to execution while also securing senior stakeholder approval.”
The LinkedIn post was filled with mixed reactions, some users even commented on the team, saying “Someone at Zomato got an earful.” whereas another user wrote, “Looks Like Zomato is learning from “Someone” to tax everything.”
A good gesture from the CEO Deepinder Goyal who immediately looked after the glitch and apologized to the user as well.
