Zomato, a global restaurant directory and online food delivery service, released a statement on September 20. It has to do with the incident of a food delivery person molesting a youngster. Well, this isn’t the first time that a similar occurrence involving these online food delivery services is happening. Here is everything about the incident that took place in Pune and what’s Zomato’s take on this.
Zomato Delivery Boy Kisses 19-Year-Old Girl
A Zomato delivery person molested and forcibly kissed a 19-year-old woman. The accused is a 40-year-old Raees Shaikh, as per media reports. He was taken into custody by the Pune police. According to reports, the incident happened on September 17 at around 9:30 pm in the Yewalewadi area of Pune. The 19-year-old claimed in the complaint that the delivery man had asked the girl for water to drink after delivering the food. He then enquired regarding her family members. She said that she lives with her roommates, who had left for their houses at the time.
As soon as he realized this, he asked for a glass of water once more. When she turned around, he gave her two kisses on the cheek. The delivery boy then walked away from the place. He also said that he is like her uncle and that she is welcome to contact him if she needs assistance. The girl claimed in the complaint that the delivery man started contacting her on WhatsApp after leaving her house. The culprit was detained after the complaint, but later, he was out on bail. Senior Police Inspector Sardar Patil said an investigation is happening into the situation.
After the incident, the 19-year-old girl was not in the mental state to talk to the media. According to the NDTV reports, the victim’s landlord said, and we quote,
“She is very petrified and tensed. After the incident, we counseled her and helped her go to the police so that no one can dare do such a thing again.”
A police officer added that,
“These apps need to carry out proper character verification, and background check before working with anyone.”
Zomato’s Official Statement On This Incident
Zomato says in the official statement that they do not tolerate such behavior at the organization. As part of the onboarding process, they also do background checks by outside sources. To assist with the investigation, Zomato has contacted the relevant authorities. According to another report from ANI, which cited Zomato, the accused is not the company’s delivery partner.
The girl attends a college in Kondhwa and is a student of engineering. The girl added that she hesitated to raise her concerns. However, when he began sending her WhatsApp messages, she reported him to the Kondhwa police station.
