With its new app, Bistro, Blinkit, Zomato’s quick-commerce arm, has taken a bold step into the fast-growing quick meal delivery market. This app promises to deliver meals, snacks, and drinks within 10 minutes, marking a fresh attempt by Zomato in the rapid food delivery segment. Bistro was launched on the Google Play Store on December 6, 2024, with an iOS version in the pipeline.

This comes when the competition in quick meal delivery is on the rise. Only one day before Bistro was rolled out, Zepto unveiled its app, Zepto Café, targeting a wider footprint in the same market. While Blinkit relies on strategically located cloud kitchens and optimized processes to fulfill its delivery promise, Zepto Café focuses on physical outlets, with plans to open more than 100 cafés monthly.

Competition Heating Up In Quick Delivery

The quick food delivery segment has gained significant attention, with leading players such as Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto seeing it as the “next growth frontier” in the market. Bistro aims to challenge Swiggy’s Bolt and Zepto Café, which already cater to the fast delivery niche by offering snacks and ready-to-eat meals like coffee, sandwiches, pastries, and samosas.

Zepto Café handles 30,000 daily orders, while Swiggy’s Bolt generates 5% of the platform’s total orders through its 10-minute delivery service. This shows how the fast food market is quickly growing, and Zomato is determined to carve out its market share with Bistro.

This is not Zomato’s first attempt at ultra-fast delivery. The company previously launched Zomato Instant, a service that was later discontinued. Bistro represents a renewed effort to succeed in this space, leveraging Blinkit’s experience in quick commerce, best known for its 10-minute grocery deliveries.

Apart from food delivery, it is said that Blinkit is looking at a new category to deliver high-value items like instant water heaters, air purifiers, and jewelry in 30 minutes. This could help diversify its business model and, therefore, enhance profitability.

Blinkit is betting big on fast food delivery with Bistro. That’s a space that leaders like Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal and Swiggy CEO Sriharsha Majety believe to be very massive. The competition will be huge in the 10-minute delivery segment, and this success will depend on whether Blinkit can scale its operations while still maintaining speed and quality. The race is on for now, and customers stand to benefit from faster, more convenient food options.
